When you visualize blinds hanging on your windows, most of the time you probably envision traditional horizontal blinds. These can be made of wood, composite, aluminum, or even vinyl. Blinds are similar to shades with this setup, as by pulling on the attached string you retract them one row at a time. However, in our industry, there is another orientation we offer as well. These are vertical blinds.
“Aren’t these more like curtains?” Perhaps at their most basic design, yes. They’re long up-and-down strips that keep light out. However, there is far more to vertical blinds than the direction they hang.

Vertical blinds are perfect for large windows
First, if you have larger-than-normal windows, you may want to consider vertical blinds over their horizontal counterparts. Large windows often work better with vertical blinds as their size better aligns with this style of window treatment. They’re versatile, which means that there isn’t an upper limit to the size of the window and how they can work in your home.
But, just as an aside, if you have smaller windows you can still benefit from vertical blinds. Often, they help make a room appear larger — but more on that in a minute.
Can they work in a modern home setup?
Absolutely! As we just alluded to, there are virtually no restrictions on the types of homes that work great with this style of window furnishing. In fact, they might work especially well with the modern home style as their straight lines and minimalist nature can feel right in line with the clean aesthetic of a modern or contemporary living area.

Glass doors work great with vertical blinds
One of the advantages of vertical blinds over traditional options is how they work with glass doors. For example, some homeowners have a patio entry in their living room or kitchen areas. When they want to slip outside, such as to sit on the deck or grill dinner, they need to retract the covering.
Imagine doing that with a set of horizontal blinds. You would either have to retract them completely or crouch down to get outside — not fun at all. With vertical blinds, you can push them back only as far as you need to, which makes them a more practical consideration for glass doors.
What about aesthetics?
Loop back to what we said a moment ago about smaller windows. These are often utilized by home builders when space is limited. To make the room feel larger, home decorators will employ several tactics to trick the eyes (and brain) into feeling as if the space is bigger.
One way to do this is with vertical blinds. Though there are many tricks to help with this goal, this type of window covering can make a small or cramped space feel more comfortable and luxurious.
That’s not the only element of aesthetics though. Vertical blinds come in many types of materials, including vinyl, wood, and more. This means they can work with a wide variety of home decorative styles, providing the visual benefits we’ve talked about while blending in with your preferred styles.
Do they work in a classic or traditional home too?
Naturally, yes they can work in these types of setups as well. Whether you have a mid-century modern room, a classic farmhouse, or are knee-deep in bringing back the 90s, vertical blinds can work in your home. They’re versatile and functional while incorporating stylistic elements from all eras.
Plus, they work great in virtually any room in your home, ranging from your living room to a family den to your dining area and more. And yes, some people will even use them in their bedrooms, especially if they have large glass doors leading to a patio or balcony off of the master suite.
